Steve Schweitzer

Born and raised in New York City, Steve first began painting with oils at age 12, but his career as an artist had many detours. He attended Cooper Union, a college of art and engineering, but engineering came first. After graduate school and five years as a computer engineer, he returned to graduate school to begin a new career as a psychologist. Vacations meant traveling abroad, and during those trips his interest in art in the form of sketching landscapes began to reassert itself. Over the years he took art classes at Lane Community College, the University of Oregon, Maude Kerns Art Center, and the Emerald Art Center.

Steve retired from psychotherapy in 2005 to begin his third career as an artist, to pursue painting and travel.  His paintings have earned awards at the Lane County Fair and the Oregon State Fair. He has shown in Portland, Corvallis, and several locations in Eugene. Despite having lived in Eugene for 35 years, he is still amazed at the natural beauty of Oregon, and takes special delight in painting Oregon landscapes. He also enjoys hiking, skiing, river rafting, racquetball, senior softball, and photography.

Steve says, "Having tried pencil, pen and ink, watercolors, acrylics and pastels, I find oils to by my natural and favorite medium.  I have traveled abroad (the other passion in my life besides painting) extensively for 40 years and thus enjoy painting a diversity of locations, including Oregon, Alaska, Mexico, Europe, Central and South America, and the South Pacific. Some of my work in en plein air, but the majority is based on my travel photos and created in my studio. I have long admired and been inspired by the Impressionists, and one of my goals is to integrate more of their styles into my work without losing my own natural style. I also enjoy a variety of subject matter, including people, animals, and still-lifes, and the endless opportunity to learn and grow as an artist."
